YESPhilly is developing a new way for students to prepare for the GED test. While we are already one of the most effective models serving youth who’ve dropped out of school, we know there is room for improvement. We are developing a model that has enriched classes for students with a broad range of math and literacy levels. This curriculum develops students’ literacy, mathematics and technology skills, and supports them throughout the process of attaining GED credentials and transitioning into credit-bearing post-secondary education or into the workforce. We are in the process of developing a project-based curriculum, which we are calling “GED and Beyond.” We are doing this work with teachers and students at YESPhilly, and will later strategically link it to a broader-based effort for GED providers within the city’s multiple pathways system. Ultimately, Philadelphia GED providers will have increased capacity to prepare students for the GED tests, strengthen their literacy, math and technology skills, and to prepare them for their future with 21st century transferable skills.
